What's Happening in September
Hello fellow collectors!
I've just returned from Richard Shields', The Carolina Trader's Old North State Antique Gun and Military Antiques Show which is held at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh three times a year. Traffic was a little slow due to NC State keeping things busy in the area by getting themselves severely trounced by Clemson. Final score: 42-20 Clemson. My father and I carried on a good-natured rivalry regarding the Tigers and the Gamecocks until his death a few years ago. He always rooted for Clemson; I always rooted for South Carolina and whatever team was playing Clemson.
There is always a huge Flea Market on the Fairgrounds during the show and I always canvass it to see what the little old ladies and other flea market afficianados have brought to titillate my collecting fancy. This time I found one very interesting pilot's wings that I have not been able to definitively identify. The hallmark is deep and clear but that didn't help me much because it appears to be Greek or Cyrillic lettering, neither of which I read. If anyone recognizes the wings, I would appreciate any information.
On to Scouting memorabilia! The show and flea market are always good sources for a piece or two that the strictly-militaria-collectors don't snatch up before I can grab them. This show was no different in that respect and I found a nice 1951 World Jamboree leather missing only the string hanger. The color is good and the embossed hallmark in the reverse is deep and clear. The same dealer also had a near mint, serial-numbered, 1963 World Jamboree Silver Laural Award.
My websites are both down for repair and have been for some time. I just can't seem to find the time to do the necessary work to get them up and running with all the time and effort I have been putting into eBay and preparing for my next, and, hopefully, LAST move. My mom passed away a few months ago. I have no other family to tie me to the area so I hope to find suitable quarters on the coast of South Carolina somewhere south of Myrtle Beach. My ulterior motive is to finally get my kids and grankids to visit me, at least during the summer. I think that might do it. --lol--
